Saturday July 13th, 2013
The 13th of July was the date the Barrie Country Club celebrated their 100th anniversary. 29 GHSC members teamed up with 84 BCC members for a hickory experience.
The weather was fabulous and the course was in wonderful condition. Bill Wogden (Pro), Anne Arksey (historian), David Burgess, Ted Vandentillaart and Doug Marshall were involved in organizing the event. Many of our GHSC members assisted by providing rental sets to be used by the BCC members. It was not the usual competitive scramble in which pairings were arranged to even out the competition. Members of the club were more interested in the "hickory experience" than an actual tournament.
A morning 9 hole shotgun with roughly 1/2 the BCC members matched up with GHSC members started at 9:30AM followed by a BBQ lunch. A piper re-enforced the mood for more hickory golf and the afternoon 9 hole shotgun was off at 1:30PM. Presentations followed the completion of the golf with our members acknowledged and thanked for their participation. Ian MacCrimmon was thanked for bringing a fine collection of golf antiques to the club and for assisting with evaluations of items brought in by the public.
A presentation was made by our President Paul Sorley to the Barrie Country Club and GHSC members were invited to David and Denise Burgess's home for drinks and hors d'oeuvres and to view David's golf collection.
All in all it was a great day.
