It was the usual wonderful day at the historic Napanee Golf club and enjoyed by 23 of our joyful and cavalier hickory lovers. The 16 complete gentlemen were joined by 7 even better ladies whose presence made the event so much better.
This date was originally set for the East/West Challenge but that contest was moved to Port Hope to accommodate travel challenged western players. Port Hope was so much fun and a perfect venue for hickory golf and the dinner great so the Eastern winners are not bitter.
That being said, this event was a scramble between the Wests and the not-Wests. I had tried to give penalties to participants complaining about their designation but the end result was the not-Wests winning by 2 strokes thanks to a wonderful round by Nick Waterfield, Liz Savill and Walter Soetens.
The winning team was Glen Fast and the wonderful Lisa, David Greenland and sweet swing Keiko, Chuck Vetere,Gord Thomas, Fred (the caddie) Boland and Garry Allen and Walter Soetens, Nick Waterfield and the incomparable Liz Savill.
Nick and Liz kindly donated a case of Prince Edward County wine for a bottle to each of the winners, and Walter gave 2 strange putters to closest to the hole winners who were Liz and newbie Bill Florence. Ultimate closest went to Bobby Sly, and he received an original copper sculpture from the Maestro Glen Fast.
The course at Napanee is challenging but perfect for hickory. The clubhouse is classic and Milt Rose, the manager, is very receptive. We will be there next year.
