GHSC News Item: July 20, 2021 Post-1900 Hickory Play

Location: Brantford Golf and Curling Club, Brantford ON

Reported by: George Supol, GHSC Board Member

Lorne Emery, GHSC Hickory Ambassador and Board Member, and Jim Wilhelm, a member of both GHSC and Brantford GCC, organized a July 20, 2021 trip to play Brantford using hickory golf clubs. Twenty-one players attended this casual play event including new GHSC member, John Rousseau from Guelph, Ontario. Although it was a very warm and humid day, most of the hickory players walked the course.

Brantford GCC, a private golf course and curling club located in Brantford, Ontario, is the 4th oldest golf club in North America having been founded in 1879. The course went through a 9-hole expansion in 1919, designed by Thompson, Cumming and Thompson, a Toronto partnership of brothers Stanley and Nicol Thompson and George Cumming, the head professional at Toronto Golf Club. Here is a link to some of the history behind the Brantford course.

Brantford GCC is rated as #13 in GolfWeek’s Top Canadian Golf Courses and #82 in SCOREGolf’s Top-100 Courses in Canada. It is home to PGA and LPGA Tour players including David Hearn, Alena Sharp, Jennifer Kirby and Nicole Vandermade.

Everyone who attended the event felt that this was a special day of hickory golf played on a truly classic golf course. A real treat!
