GHSC News Item: June 17, 2021 Gananoque G&CC – 100th Anniversary

Location: Gananoque G&CC, Gananoque ON

Reported by: Bob West, GHSC Board Member

Alf Read, ambassador for the Centennial Committee of the Gananoque Golf & Country Club, kindly invited members of the Golf Historical Society of Canada to join him and players from the GG&CC in a playing celebration of the club’s 100th anniversary.

So on June 17, 2021, the day following the 200th anniversary of the birth of Old Tom Morris, 23 impeccably and traditionally attired lady and gentleman golfers gathered at the 100 year old 1st tee. GHSC president Jeff Rogers highlighted our part in the introductions by reading a passage from the 1921 Canadian Golfer detailing the new origins and objectives of the club.

The actual event was a scramble with players from the GHSC teaming up with host players. GG&CC players enjoyed the new challenges and marvelled at how golfers using hickory clubs could have played so well and our players loved the old traditional style layout. The GHSC supplied clubs for our hosts and engaged in energetic recruitment. While we were all winners, the prizes for the lowest scoring team went to President Rogers, Hickory member Richard Saxe and Gan members Brian Healy and Vivien White.

The introduction and play was recorded by CKWS/Global sports reporter Doug Jeffries and shown on the nightly news.

Following play, a Covid-restricted wine and cheese get-together was held on the clubhouse veranda. Bob West brought a small collection of unique wood shafted clubs to show how far (or not) our equipment has come.

The GG&CC is a traditional course with a quirkiness fitting its origins. The ambience of the surroundings and membership is warm and gentle. We were privileged to be invited to share their celebrations and expect that there will be hickory played there again.
