Hickory Clinic at Cedarhurst (2022)

GHSC News Item: July 3, 2022 – Hickory Clinic at Cedarhurst (2022)
Reported by: Alan Lew, GHSC Hickory Ambassador
On May 31, 2022, seven of GHSC’s finest (Hickory Ambassadors—Chris Cade, Lorne Emery, Wayne Hein, Stan Lapidus, Allan Lew, Jim Parker and Mike Stephenson) trekked to Cedarhurst GC, near the delightful community of Beaverton, Ontario on Lake Simcoe, along with a stacked carload of 15 loaner hickory playsets.
An introductory hickory golf clinic with orientation and live-play mentoring took place in a hickory practice round with an enthusiastic group of 17 Cedarhurst members (both lassies and laddies), including club pros and management. GHSC Hickory Ambassadors were paired up with club members, a minimum of one ambassador in each of six golf foursomes to assist as hickory mentors in club/shot selection, and to help hickory newcomers develop a more classic hickory swing and tempo.
Cedarhurst is a Stanley Thompson-designed course, built in 1922. Cedarhurst will be celebrating its 100-year club anniversary through a series of week-long activities in mid-July. GHSC will be supporting a special historical hickory golf tourney and re-enactment of golf play with hickory/wood shafted clubs like it was 100 years ago. A 9-hole hickory scramble format for members and invited guests is scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, July 17. Members and guests have been encouraged to dress up in classic hickory era attire for the day. GHSC will be providing hickory golf playsets and a Hickory Ambassador will be supporting each member-foursome.
The advance hickory practice session on May 31 was indeed a “sizzling hot one”, some excellent hickory shot-making took place while played under sweltering 30-degree temperatures with a soaring humidex reaching 40+ degrees C. Post-game, everyone happily retired to the newly renovated Cedarhurst clubhouse and restaurant patio for cool refreshments and social banter of their newly acquired hickory skills and triumphs of the day. By all accounts, everyone had a great hickory experience, some good laughs and a new-found readiness for the upcoming Cedarhurst Centennial hickory scramble on July 17, 2022.
