Uplands Golf & Ski Club - 100th Anniversary Celebration (2022)

GHSC News Item: May 14, 2022 – Uplands 100th Anniversary (2022)

Reported by: Jeff Rogers, GHSC Board Member and President

May 14, 2022 saw a group of intrepid GHSC Hickory Ambassadors attend the 100th Anniversary of this beautiful Stanley Thompson designed golf course in Thornhill, Ontario. While only 9 holes still remain from Thompson’s original design, the Uplands course is still a lovely testament of the talent he had for seeing amazing golf architecture where only trees, ravines, hills and and fields existed.

The event was well organized by Golf North Inc., the course manager, and was attended by a host of local dignitaries including City of Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Golf Canada President Liz Hoffman and area reps, Golf Ontario, The Stanley Thompson Society, Lorne Rubenstein and a host of others, each who spoke passionately about their Uplands experiences over the years.

GHSC was asked to set up a display table of appropriate artifacts for the day and this was well received and provided an excellent point of interest for all those in attendance. We also provided loaner hickory clubs for any of the attendees to use for play on the first two holes at Uplands and we’re thrilled to report that a healthy number of onlookers became hickory players for an hour or so and thoroughly enjoyed themselves with our loaner hickory gear.

Many thanks to our team of Hickory Ambassadors (Lorne Emery, Mike Stevenson, Vaughn Perusse, Allan Lew, John Medeiros and Ron Weins) as well as Stan Lapidus for contributing to the interesting display and manning our booth. Golf North Chief Agronomist and Area Supervisor Doug Breen was very appreciative for our presence at Uplands and the effort that the GHSC put forward to help ensure that his guests truly enjoyed their day!
