Hickory Play at Sawmill (2022)

GHSC News Item: July 1, 2022 – Hickory Play at Sawmill (2022)

Reported by: Alan Lew, GHSC Hickory Ambassador

Sawmill GC, Fenwick/Vineland, ON. and George and Gail Julie (owners & GHSC members) were once again gracious hosts for GHSC’s Hickory Regional Play Group (RPG) – Niagara Region. Sawmill was the perfect setting (excellent course conditions, scenic vistas, outstanding hospitality) on a warm, beautiful June 27th summer afternoon for the troupe of 14 adventuresome hickory players and guests. Travelling players and guests came from Kitchener, Cambridge, Simcoe, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville.

The hickory golf participants included 3 first-time newcomers, each of whom thoroughly enjoyed their new found hickory golf experience. Local Sawmill club member and hickory neophyte, Rob Holland won the first closest-to-the pin shootout contest on par-3, hole #3. Wily GHSC hickory veteran, Lorne Emery won the second hickory shootout challenge on par-3, hole #14. Two nameless bystanders allege they saw Lorne’s shot ricochet off of an unsuspecting rabbit’s front paw at the edge of the green, then two bounces to within 7 feet of the pin. And then Lorne finally makes par …  so birdie must only have been a hare’s chance! The hickory shootout winners received bottled prizes for their efforts from one of Niagara’s finest wineries in local Vineland, Ontario.

The hickory group retired to the Sawmill patio for post-game refreshments and lively golf banter, hickory boasts and social catch-ups. By all indications, a very enjoyable time was had by all.

Thanks to Frank and Donna Collis for capturing the photos on the day.  Special thanks again to George, Gail and Jeremy Julie for providing a wonderful day of golf and festivity at Sawmill GC for our play group.
