Tam O'Shanter 90th Anniversary (2023)

The winning Golf Ontario scramble team

GHSC News Item: October 14, 2023 – Tam O’Shanter 90th Anniversary (2023) Reported by: George Supol, GHSC Hickory Ambassador.

On Friday, October 13, Golf Historical Society of Canada organized a scramble golf event to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of Tam O’Shanter (TOS) Golf Course, City of Toronto.

The weather was typical for the fall (cool/breezy) and the course was in fine shape even though it had rained recently.

Ten invited teams of players participated as follows:

  • Three teams of golf associations (Golf Canada/First Tee, Golf Ontario, and PGA of Canada)
  • Golf Journalists Association of Canada (GJAC) team
  • Turfcare team
  • Three teams from Golf Historical Society of Canada
  • Two teams representing Tam O’Shanter

Players from the three GHSC teams generally played hickories from the Red tees while other players played modern clubs from the White tees.

Hats and ball markers were provided to all players by the Club. Additional GHSC ball markers were distributed to players who attended the after-round meal at St. Andrew’s Fish and Chips in Scarborough.

A putting contest using hickory putters was held before the round. Players could choose from several different types of putters and were each given 3 attempts to sink a 20-foot downhill, right-to-left breaking putt. Several putts came close to going in but unfortunately, no one actually made it.

The winning scramble team with a score of 61 (11 under par) was Golf Ontario (Craig Loughry, Colton Sansom, Ryan Finn and Mallory Dayman).

Second place was won by Turfcare with a score of 62 (10 under par).

Third place was won by Golf Canada with a score of 64 (8 under par).

Fourth place was won by GHSC #1 with a score of 65 (7 under par).

The closest-to-the-pin prizes were won by Ross Oldcorn (hole #6) and Vaughn Perusse from GHSC (hole #16). The longest drive (hole #13) was won by Ryann Finn from Golf Ontario.

Winners mentioned above, who did not receive their prizes at the restaurant after the round, should contact George Supol (webmaster@ghsc.ca) about receiving their prizes.

At the restaurant, GHSC presented Patrick Fogarty of The City of Toronto, with a “Kelly Leonard” replica long-nose play club (Dun/Wil), with a leather insert face, in honour of Tam O’Shanter’s 90th anniversary.
